Brostoff Guidebook
Every cemetery restoration project has it's unique opportunities, challenges, and final results. But there are many common things that can be learned from another project and the experiences of those who carry it out.
We're happy to present a document from our friend Bill Brostoff. He has created The Guidebook for Jewish Cemetery Restoration based on his experience with restoring the cemetery in Trzcianne, Poland. Please check out these helpful resources from Bill as you consider your own cemetery restoration project.
Dr. Bill Brostoff is a retired Marine Ecologist. He earned his B.S. at the University of California, Irvine; M.S. at San Diego State, and Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii. He did a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Bill worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as a research scientist, environmental manager, and trouble-shooter. His formal career started in Vicksburg, MS, at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), and continued at the San Francisco District of the Corps of Engineers. He conceived, developed, and taught courses for the Corps of Engineers and other federal employees. He is author/co-author of about fifty technical publications including peer-reviewed journals such as Science, Ecological Monographs, and Wetlands; Corps of Engineers Technical reports/notes including contributions to the Corps of Engineers Delineation Manual; and varied technical conference/symposium papers. Many of his projects and technical publications involved restoration of kelp forests, coral reefs, and wetlands.
Bill served as treasurer of his congregation, Kol Hadash, in Berkeley, California, and is on the Board of Directors of the Society for Humanistic Judaism.
Bill lives in the Berkeley (California) hills, with his wife, Dr. Jill Alban, who is Director of Academic Support, Touro University of California.
