The Matzevah Foundation's 2024 Projects
We are happy to announce the dates and locations of our 2024 work in Poland! If you’ve followed us for a while, you’ll notice mostly new cities and cemeteries on our calendar. It’s exciting to return to one familiar community that has welcomed us in the past as well as the chance to explore new parts of Poland.
Each project will focus on cleaning and clearing a cemetery that has become overgrown and possibly neglected. We’ll be joined by volunteers from across Poland and around the world.

April 29-May 4 Przysucha Jewish Cemetery
We are happy to return to Przysucha to continue our non-invasive archeological research and continue cleaning the cemetery. We’ll be partnering once more with Jewish Przysucha and Professor Radoslaw Ptaszynski, students and staff from The University of Szczecin (Poland) and Staffordshire University (England). We’re grateful for the continued support provided by The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland.
June 14-22 Nowogród Jewish Cemetery *
This will be our first time in Nowogród and we’re looking forward to our time here. Our partners for this project include descendants of Nowogród and their friends as well as the City of Nowogród, owners of the cemetery. We are also collaborating with the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland and Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland. The work will focus on clearing the overgrowth of vegetation from around the cemetery which contains 18 standing matzevot (headstones).
June 28-July 6 Żychlin Jewish Cemetery *
Another new location for us! Located in the Lódź region of Poland, TMF will be collaborating again with the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland and joining forces with a dedicated group of descendants and friends led by Professor Marysia Galbraith of the University of Alabama who is the president of The Association of Descendants of Jewish Central Poland. We’re eager to welcome local volunteers who will join us in our week of work.
July 15-17 Krasnystaw Jewish Cemetery
For a fourth year, TMF is pleased to support the Future Scholars Program from JewishGen. Along with Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland, a group of university students will tour important Jewish sites around Poland before gathering in Krasnystaw for a few days of work in the Jewish cemetery. The team will also be joined by volunteers from Studnia Pamięci in Lublin. Along with the work in the cemetery, there will also be many discussions and learning opportunities in the evenings.
August 2-10 Zawiercie Jewish Cemetery
Our final project for 2024 takes us to Zawiercie. The team will be made up of several groups including an active descendants group, Zaglebie World Organization, JewishGen Neshema Project, Brentwood Baptist Church in Tennessee, and the City of Zawiercie along with local volunteers.
*We have two projects that are open to volunteers this year. All applications must be submitted by midnight Eastern Time on April 30, 2024. Please visit this link for more information on the volunteer process with TMF.
We invite you to follow us on Facebook or Instagram to stay up on our planning and return to Poland this year.
