Our friends at The Project to Restore the Przerosl Jewish Cemetery has written up a detailed look into the week of work we did together earlier this month. This was the first time we have partnered together and hope to return to this eastern corner of Poland to continue the work next year.
We invite you to check out their article about the project and to learn about their future plans to remember the Jewish heritage of Przerosl, Poland. A great article has been published with The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle that recaps the recent project that The Matzevah Foundation was a part of. President Steven Reece joined 10 gentleman, all alumni of the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Kansas City. The team worked in the Jewish cemetery in Wodzislaw, Poland to begin cleaning the overgrown cemetery.
The article provides a great look into the experience and reflections these young men had during the week of work together. It is with great excitement that we share with you that The Matzevah Foundation's President, Steven Reece, was awarded the "Preserving Memory" award this week in a ceremony held in Krakow, Poland. The award was set up 20 years ago by Michael Traison, an American lawyer who has a passion for marking and remembering Jewish heritage throughout Poland.
Steven was accompanied to the ceremony by Przemek Panisuik, a TMF Advisory Board member who lives in Warsaw. We invite you to view this article to learn more about the award and the honor that Steven has received. We are grateful to Mr. Traison and his team for recognizing Steven's work and that of our organization in this special way! Earlier this month, The Matzevah Foundation was in Nasielsk, Poland working for a second year with a group of Nasielsk descendants. They came from the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, and Uruguay for a week of work in the Jewish cemetery. It is a privilege for TMF to work alongside this group of wonderful people who have a heart and passion for remembering and honoring the Jewish heritage of this small Polish town.
We invite you to read a brief recap of the project and view some great pictures that were provided by Glenn Kurtz and Michael Valihora. TMF looks forward to continuing this strong partnership in the years to come. Steven Reece, president of The Matzevah Foundation, was recently asked to share an article with Jewish Heritage Europe. Please check out his article for a glimpse into what motivates him in the work he does with TMF in Poland.
The Matzevah Foundation has been pleased to work for two years with Dr. Caroline Sturdy Colls of Staffordshire University in the UK. Dr. Colls arrived in Poland with a team of students and equipment to survey several Jewish cemeteries in the country. TMF joined them in Oświęcim. Our team went ahead of the students to clean the cemetery of the tall vegetation so they could then follow with their equipment.
Their goal was to use non-ground penetrating methods to survey and document the destruction of this cemetery. The results they conclude will help them to understand how the cemetery has been desecrated not just from the time of World War II but also afterwards. We invite you to read the article written by Dr. Colls at the completion of the survey to learn more about this unique and critical work. TMF is proud to be a part of their efforts. We'd like to thank Chanan Kessler for mentioning the work The Matzevah Foundation has done in Zambrow, Poland in his recent blog post. This article provides a quick look into the current landscape of the Jewish cemetery here. TMF was honored to work here for two summers and participated in a commemoration event in 2012.
We are blessed to have many friends and family who encourage and support the work we do at The Matzevah Foundation. One such friend is Jan Jaben-Eilon in Georgia. She has published a wonderful article on TMF's president Steven Reece today in the Atlanta Jewish Times. The piece provides a great look at the heart of our organization which is lead by Steven.
